Jerome and James_Mmm , That's Tasty

HOME ACTIVITY: Talk to whanau about flavour. What flavours do they like best? Sweet, Sour, Salty, Bitter and Umami (savoury).
Why?
What are their favourite salty, sour, bitter, sweet or savoury foods?

  1. There are 5 main flavour receptors. Sweet, Salty, Bitter, Sour and Umami.
List some foods fit each of the flavour receptors.  SHARE

Its has about 10,000 taste buds that is on top of your tongue,your papillae.
Receptor (p.26 )
Receptor is a taste bud that recognizes food types like sweet,sour,salty,bitter and umami(savoury).

  1. On Page 29, there is the great jelly bean challenge. Mrs Parker will provide you with some Jelly Beans (or other items) to complete this task. SHARE

    • You need to write this very carefully (like a recipe) so that anyone who reads it can follow your experiment.
    • You will need to use objective and formal language (without personal opinion, just the facts)

Question: Do our taste buds require smell?

Hypothesis: (1 -2 sentences telling what you think/hypothesis will be the result. Answer the question) I think that we won't be able to taste anything and you will have to rely on the textures that your tongue picks up (Eg Flakes, crumble and it continues)

Materials: (List ALL the things you need to complete the experiment)
  • Food
  • Blind fold
  • Hands
  • Partner(s) (optional)
  • Nose
  • Piece of paper and a pen/pencil

Procedure: (List ALL the steps you need to take complete the experiment- like a recipe)

  1. First you prepare the food
  2. Then you put on the blind fold
  3. Then with one hand pinch your nose and make sure you can’t smell anything
  4. With the other hand put the Jelly bean or other types of food in your mouth
  5. Chew it and do not swallow
  6. Tell your partner what you taste, for example texture and taste
  7. Then when he/she has written it down on the piece of paper  
  8. After they did that take off the blindfold and unblock your nose
  9. Then tell them the difference in the tastes

Observations: (Record what happened as each step occurred)
  1. The first taste I got when I put the Jelly bean in my mouth was the sugar
  2. I also looked for the texture and what I picked up was a flakey kind of texture
  3. When I opened my eyes and unblocked my nose I immediately knew what the flavour was
  4. The flavour I guessed was Grape and the bean flavour was Grape.
Conclusion: (Answer the question. Was your hypothesis correct? Why/Why not?

Yes, My hypothesis was right because I looked for the texture and how much sugar I could taste in that bean.

A bunch of Bananas

HOME ACTIVITY: Ask whanau about their favourite ways to eat banana. Get a favourite banana recipe from a family member to bring to school.

  1. Hope sees many types of bananas at the market.
Can you list all the types of banana and the descriptive features of each banana.  SHARE

Type of Banana
List the descriptive features of each banana (Colour, size, smell, etc)
Green Banana
They have a smooth-skin and that have a thick stalk and starchy to eat raw.
Yellow Banana
They nice to eat straight away also they are very easy to peel.
Red Banana
They are short stubby orangey-red bananas that are creamy like when you eat whipped cream.
Ladyfinger Banana
The ladyfinger bananas are the one’s that her grandmother likes the skin have spotty but bruised.

  1. This story refers to the coconut tree as ‘the tree of life’.  Explain in as much detail as possible,  why it is the tree of life in your own words. SHARE
    1. It's called The Tree of life for a reason because it provides food shelter and milk.The Tree can also be used for fan's just in case you fell hot but you don't want to go in the salty water.


  1. Explain the connection between the Tuna and the Coconut SHARE
    1. Its because Sina was very good friends because he was ready to die and when he died Sina buried Tunas head in the sand and Sina keep watering it every day and not many months later there was a little plant in was a coconut sapling growing out of the ground.That’s why coconuts look like an eels face.

SHARE No i haven't heard about the legend but i have read the story and it is very interesting now that i know that a coconut looks like an eels head.

How I spent my time in the holidays

The holidays are a two week break when we do not attend school but

between term 3 and term 4 also during the month of October.


In the holidays I went to the mt wellington rebel sports to get me some cool shoes and two days later I went to the movies at Sylvia park with Jerome because it was my birthday to watch a new movie called The Maze Runner and eat and drink food like (popcorn and drink coca cola in large cup’s.

But before we,me and Jerome, entered the movie’s me and Jerome had lunch.We had butter chicken with rice and naan bread then me and Jerome went to go get our tickets,popcorn and large cup of coca cola then we went to the waiting room.


The waiting room has small flat screen TVs that has a showcase of new movies like,The Hunger games Mocking bird part 1,The maze runner,Lets be cops,Teenage mutant ninja turtles and a funny movie called Bang Bang then we got up and walked into the theater to find our seats.



When me and Jerome found our seats we also saw some one from our school it was Danielle her brother,sister and dad walking up the red steps and at the end a fat chubby kid called Chuck got shot and the rest got rescued.
